You march confidently up the castle stairs to the main entrance. You tell the guard you are a shoe repairman, here to return the princess’ glass slipper, which you pull out of your pocket.

To your surprise, he lets you pass. You wander through the maze of hallways to the ballroom where chandeliers flicker and the orchestra plays. You admire the grand columns and Gothic archways. Suddenly a castle guard steps in front of you, looking you up and down. “No peasants allowed,” he booms.

Over the guard’s shoulder, you see Princess Charming making her grand entrance. The ruby crown on her head sparkles in the candlelight. As she steps across the dance floor, you notice she’s wearing only one glass slipper.

Now is your chance! “Princess Charming!” you call, waving the slipper in the air.

The princess whirls to look at you. The orchestra stops playing, and silence falls on the crowd. You can hear your heart hammering. The princess’ eyes travel to the slipper in your hand. You expect her to smile gratefully, but instead shock and anger cross her face. “Thief!” she cries. “To the dungeon with him!”

Royal guards grab your arms roughly.

“Wait!” you say. You cast a final pleading look at your stepbrothers, but they are busy making pigs of themselves at the buffet table.

The guards drag you from the ballroom to the dank, dark dungeon, where you will live out your days as a prisoner. You got your wish to live in the castle, but the dungeon is all you’ll see.
