Chapter 13

Rory

I'm rifling through my closet, a sense of nervous excitement bubbling within me. Tonight is the night I go on my first real date with Collin, something I've been anticipating all week. Lisa lounges on my bed, scrolling through her phone, occasionally chiming in with advice.

The light banter and the sound of hangers clinking against the rod fill the room until a sharp knock at the door slices through the chatter. Lisa shoots me a curious glance. "Expecting anyone?"

I shake my head, my brow furrowing as I move towards the door. Maybe it's a neighbor or a lost freshman. I swing the door open to reveal two somber-faced university staff members, their hats held against their chests, a stark contrast to the usual campus bustle.

"Rory Sullivan?" the taller one asks, his voice grave.

"Yes, that's me." My heart begins to race, sensing that whatever brought them here is far from ordinary.

"We need to speak with you about a serious matter concerning Caroline." The woman's eyes, brimming with a professional yet compassionate restraint, meet mine.

Caroline? My mind reels. The last I knew, Caroline was recovering in the hospital, a quiet relief amidst our hectic lives.

"Can we come in?" the man asks gently.

As they settle into the cramped space, their presence seems to swallow the room's usual comfort. They explain in hushed tones that Caroline has been murdered in her hospital room last night. Despite the hospital's security measures, all cameras in her wing had inexplicably gone dark at the time of the incident, leaving the authorities with no leads or suspects.

I feel the room spin, the walls closing in as if trying to suffocate me. Caroline, the ever-vibrant presence, is now a memory shrouded in mystery and violence. My knees weaken, and I find myself sinking into the nearest chair.

Lisa, her face a ghostly pale, her phone forgotten beside her, kneels beside me, her hand shaking as it finds mine. "Oh, Rory," she gasps, her voice a mere whisper, her eyes glossy with unshed tears. "She was my cousin, my childhood buddy... I can't believe this."

The staff members offer their condolences and leave as quietly as they had arrived, leaving a heavy silence in their wake. I can hardly comprehend the words, the reality too sharp, too sudden. My thoughts are a chaos of memories and disbelief.

"You don't have to go out tonight," Lisa says softly, her voice steadying but her gaze distant as if lost in a sea of memories with Caroline.

I look up, my eyes glazed with tears, a tempest of sorrow and confusion reflected in them. "I don't know. Maybe it's better if I do. I can't just sit here with this... this emptiness."

Lisa nods, understanding yet worried, her hands clenched tightly in her lap. "Okay, but I'm here, alright? Whatever you need."

As I prepare for the date, the motions feel hollow, each step a monumental effort. I don my outfit, a beautiful ensemble that suddenly seems irrelevant. My reflection in the mirror is a stranger, someone marked irrevocably by loss.
