Back in the cabin, Shay pulled the duffle bag out from under her bed and retrieved the crystal ball.

“How’s he doing?” Poppy asked, changing out of her shorts and into a pair of jeans.

Shay set the crystal ball on the bedside table. It glowed from within, Aidan’s image wispy but clear.

“Still enjoying himself,” Shay said. It was the one positive to the situation—knowing Aidan was safe. “Although his personal trainer is going to kill him.”

“His trainer?” Poppy walked over. “Why?”

Shay gestured to the crystal ball. “Look at the size of that cake.”

“What?” Poppy’s eyes widened with alarm. “Don’t eat that!”

But Aidan didn’t hear her. He swallowed the bite of cake and took another.

“What is it?” Shay turned to Poppy, whose face had gone pale.

“You’re not supposed to eat in the fae realm.”

Shay furrowed her brow. “Why not?”

Poppy studied the crystal ball, her face etched with concern. “Legend has it, once you eat in the faery realm, you lose all appetite for real food.”

Shay turned back to see Aidan starting on another piece of cake. “I’m no expert, but that cake looks real to me.”

Poppy twitched her shoulders. “Maybe the lore is wrong, but… In general, I err on the side of caution. Even made-up stories come from somewhere.”

A fact Shay knew all too well. Many of the stories she’d thought were make-believe had turned out to be true.

“He won’t be there much longer,” she said. “And I’ll force-feed him if I have to.”

Poppy nodded. “You’re right. As long as he doesn’t tell them his name, he’ll be fine.”

Shay’s stomach twisted. Aidan was an actor. The only thing he liked better than saying his own name was having others say it. “What happens if he gives them his name?”

“He’ll be under their control, with no free will of his own.”

Shay pressed her lips together to keep from voicing her thoughts.

We are so totally screwed.
