I am letting go of the need to keep up appearances or to project an overly impressive self-image. I am becoming ever more willing to appear as I am, without pretense and no matter how unflattering. Being loved for who I am has become more important—and more interesting—than upholding the ever-shaky status of my persona in the world.

Respectful Assertiveness
AS WE GROW EMOTIONALLY and spiritually, we learn to be assertive rather than aggressive in our dealings with others. This means the following:
We are clear about our needs and motives. We ask for what we want, but we do not attempt, directly or indirectly, to manipulate others. We can hear a no and accept it, rather than pushing or harassing others to bend to our will.
We take responsibility for our own feelings. We show our feelings directly and nonintrusively. We are open to the feelings of others but do not accept abuse. We ask that others respect our boundaries and choices. We honor the individual and relationship boundaries of others.
We show respect for the timing of others by not insisting that they respond as we would or act as quickly as we might like. We accept the given that everyone operates on a unique timetable and we show patience and respect for this variety in human responsiveness.
