Build Trust

Many of us think improvement means targeting all the deficits that have been identified in our setting. How much do we let what's wrong determine what we do next instead of harnessing our strengths to build a stronger school? Is it possible to build a school improvement approach that uses trust instead of deficits as the primary framework? If culture eats strategy for breakfast, why feed it?

Instead of trying improvement strategies that may or may not work with the current culture, we recommend building a process that complements the way cultures are built and what cultures thrive on. Instead of using past failures to determine what to chase this year, use trust as the foundation for what happens next.

Figures 3.1 and 3.2 provide a visual of these two types of approaches. Figure 3.1 represents how schools with toxic, deficit-based cultures tend to do things, chasing the low numbers and using these numbers to scare people into compliance. Figure 3.2 presents a different approach that positive, trust-based cultures take; notice the similar flow, but with a few key differences.
