Chapter Nine

As soon as Aleks left, Trent dressed and slid back into his sleeping bag as if nothing had happened. He used a wet wipe to clean himself up, hoping the slight soapy scent would be enough to keep the guys from smelling sex on him. With a smile, he snuggled into his sleeping bag, thankful at least to have seen his lover and know he was all right. Anything else, like thinking about Aleks working for the bastard Ioakim would set him over the edge.

Commotion sounded outside his tent. Trent scrambled free of his sleeping bag. Aleksander? He flipped open the flap on his tent to see Kjell racing in his direction. “We have to go. There’s been an attack on the compound.”

“Shit!” Trent pulled inside, then stood and began gathering his gear. He had his tent stowed and everything packed in under ten minutes, and helped everyone load everything in under twenty. “What happened?” He asked once he sat in the snow cat as Bjorn drove it back toward the compound.

“An attack of sorts. Sigrid radioed and reported shots. Cam chased them away, and it seemed to be nothing more than a menace. Shots fired into the air, a show of force outside the gates. Nothing serious, but serious enough that I want to go back. She thinks it was the other shifters.” Kjell explained.

“Would make sense to get us out of there. But how could someone get to the compound so quickly after our meeting?” Hans asked.

“Because they didn’t want us there in the first place,” Bjorn said. “Damn it.” He pounded his palm on the steering wheel. “I told Vik we should just continue as planned.”

“No one got hurt. Let’s get back and figure things out.” Kjell tried to soothe Bjorn, but the commander only tensed his jaw.

Trent leaned back in the seat and tried to catch up on the sleep he was missing. They’d find out answers soon enough, he guessed, and sitting here thinking about things wouldn’t change the situation. His thoughts drifted to his lover and he couldn’t help but think that maybe Aleksander had a different reason for being there. No. What had happened had been too good, too intense for it to be anything but a hastily arranged affair. Aleksander had said he would be back. He would be, and Trent hoped he’d bring answers with him.

~* * *~

In the conference room Bjorn played the surveillance tapes one more time on the big screen. Three men, all carefully hooded and concealed, rode up on fast-moving snowmobiles. The cold front had played into the interloper’s plans, because enough snow covered the ground to allow for smooth cruising, yet wouldn’t impede travel.

One man, apparently the leader, pulled out a SKS and fired several shots into the sky. One of the other men did the same thing with an AK-47, while the third guy apparently hung back as a lookout. The duo circled in front of the gates, at one point even ramming them with the fronts of their snowmobiles.
