She thought of coffee and pushed her hair away from her face. She pushed herself to sit, and there was only Arkos in bed with her, sitting with his back to the headboard and thumbing through his phone with one hand; the other was lying against her back.

She croaked, “Left-handed?”

“Ambidextrous. It comes in handy.”

She nodded and looked around. “Coffee?”

“It’s coming. Elias and Wander went to get your car and some clothing from your house.” He cocked his head. “And here they are.”

Libby felt a dim vibration that must have been the front door closing. Arkos chuckled. “You held up very well last night, Elspetha, especially when Elias’s incoming rut bled through.”

“Is that what that was? I was just imagining his beast showing up in this room and the odds of making it out the window.”

Arkos laughed. “You wouldn’t make it far. We are all very attached to you.”

“If you say so.” She pulled her hair over her shoulder and combed it with her fingers. She looked at him and saw his surprised expression. “I know Elias is, but you and Wander just met me last night.”

“And yet, we got your dossier last week.”

“Oh, good lord. I am going to kill Olyna.” She buried her face in her hands.

He reached out and rubbed her back. “It was informative and contained your dating history, family history, favourite colours and flowers.”

“Oh, geez. I bet that was wrong. My favourite colour is cornflower blue, and my favourite flower is wild daisies.”

He checked the file. “You are right. It was wrong. It said pink and roses.”

“See? Oma probably got the information from Mirrel.”

“Why does she hate you? Sorry if it’s rude to ask.”

The other guys came in as she lunged to get her phone. She grinned at the cup from her favourite coffee shop and didn’t even look at the man behind it. She brought up an image. “This was my mother.”

“Holy shit. You are a copy.”

“So my dad has said, and then he looks sad, and Mirrel looks pissed. After that, she grabs him by the arm, rubs against him, and drags him away.” She sighed. “I do wish I could have met her.”

Libby stared at the image that looked like her own face, but the eyes were her father’s. The scent of coffee reminded her that there was a cup in her hand.

She sipped and closed her eyes, humming happily. Elias kissed the top of her head, and Wander looked at her phone. “She looks kind.”

“I have seen some videos from when my parents were courting. Or high school for lack of a better description. They went to prom together, and I was with them already.”

Wander asked, “Was there anyone your mother knew who could help you learn about her?”

“No. From what my dad told me, they didn’t want anything to do with me. I killed their baby girl after all.” She sighed. “If I have a child and I don’t make it, don’t ever make it feel like that.”

Elias kissed her head again.
