I attempted to break the channel-surfing habit by systematically limiting the choices. On Saturday the fourth, I was down to two: channel 40 and channel 6. So it was Ravel’s Brain and Hockey Night in Canada.

The doctor sings a report: an accident in a taxi, a blow to the skull. A player is down on the ice. Someone’s elbow out of the blue, deliberate and accidental. Whistle, bell and horn in the arena and, would you believe, it is the composer’s own music that the surgical records are set to. Is he faking it? He sings like opera, and the player, take a close look, is gripping a stick. Can you do that while comatose? If you bang your head in a taxi, do you lose your music? No, sings the surgeon. It just stays in your brain. You you you are silently agitated. And the hockey player? They carried him off on a stretcher looking dead. Diagnosed concussion. Although later he walked out of the dressing room giving the finger to someone. Ravel looked alive during surgery. No general anaesthetic for brain operations in 1937. Fear of edema, sang the doctor. The hockey guy, Scott somebody, survived. So did Ravel, briefly.
