Chapter 18

My hand slides against the banister as I walk up the spiraling staircase, my skirt in my other hand, so I don't trip on its hem. I hold my head high, a smile on my lips, unable to stop since Theo left my room. I can still feel him pushing in and out of me, his tongue sliding against mine, and his moans. My skin feels flushed. My insides heat with renewed desire, and I can feel myself growing wet with need. A part of me wants to cancel this dinner and run back into Theo's arms, to have him touch me again and again.

But this dream needs to end at some point, and I need to return to my place. This curse I've put on myself needs to end. I must prove to all of Thaelussa that I am better than Selena and strong enough to rule in my father's stead. Proving myself has always been my top priority.

Yet, I can feel that slipping away from me with each passing minute amongst the humans, and now all I want is to feel that love I felt with Theo only hours ago. I will never see him again after this dinner. I should have said goodbye. I should have followed him out. I should have told him I feel the same for him. Now, he will never know.

It's for the best, I tell myself, straightening as I step onto the landing, my hand going to my pocket, feeling the pouch of poison I have hidden. I lift my head, staring down the hall lined with large windows overlooking the sea, the sun setting in the distance, making the stone floor appear orange. Ten guards stand on either side of the corridor, their bodies stiff, a sword sheathed at their sides. Four servants walk in a row toward me, holding tempting platters, their eyes wide on me as they pass.

I smile and run my hands over my gown. I must look beautiful. That's the only reason why they would stare so openly. Emma glances over her shoulder, several feet ahead of me, and I rush toward her, fighting a wince with each step. The shoes Emma found for me were too small, yet I didn't want to wear the black shoes I usually adorn. Emma went through the trouble of finding something for me to wear with my dress. I intend to take them when I leave to remind me of fond days spent with a good friend.

"I cannot go any further than this," Emma says when we reach the door at the end of the corridor. "The guards will permit your entrance, but I must return to my duties."

I frown at the double doors. "Will I get lost?"

Emma chuckles and pats my shoulder. "Not at all. The dining hall is just through those doors. Elias will be there. Now," Emma leans close and smiles at me, "don't forget my advice."

"Never," I whisper harshly, taking her hands and giving them a gentle squeeze.
