Ann in VR, from the outside. Self-portrait.

In the 1980s you could cruise the sidewalk cafés on University Avenue in Palo Alto and tell who had gotten a demo at VPL in the past day or so. The pressure left characteristic red marks on the face. Tribal marks, we used to say.

In the late 1980s, VPL switched to lightweight Fresnel optics—those thin magnifiers composed of concentric circular ridges. VPL’s Fresnel design was largely the work of Mike Teitel, one of the early Veeple.

We were able to achieve a resolution and field of view that would hold up today, though we had to charge fifty grand per pair, and that number isn’t adjusted for inflation. I had missed those lighter goggles for many years, but lately the new wave of VR entrepreneurs have rediscovered the joy of lightweight optics.
