Summary of hike: Devilâs Bridge, a massive 54-foot-high sandstone arch, is the tallest natural arch in Sedona. The bridge has a thickness of five feet and spans over 45 feet. The cracked and fractured bridge sits at the foot of Capitol Butteâs north face, just inside the Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness. From atop the arch are dramatic vistas of the surrounding canyons, mountains, and red rock formations. The trail to Devilâs bridge begins on an old unpaved road and climbs natural rock steps to the summit.
Driving directions: From the Sedona Y (Highways 89A and 179 junction), drive 3.1 miles southwest on Highway 89A (towards Cottonwood) to Dry Creek Road. Turn right and drive 2 miles to the posted Dry Creek Road (F.S. Road 152/Vultee Arch Road) on the right. Turn right and continue 1.3 miles on the unpaved road to the posted trailhead parking area on the right.
Hiking directions: Take the wide, posted trail east, and wind through the sparse forest of pinyon pine and juniper. Parallel a wash on the near-level path, and curve right towards Capitol Butte at 0.4 miles. Continue strolling up canyon to a trail split by a huge rock overhang at 0.7 miles. The narrow path to the left leads 100 yards to the base of the natural bridge. The main trail curves right and ascends the cliff face on steep rock steps to an overlook of the surrounding basin and red rock formations. Head up another set of rock steps to the backside of Devilâs Bridge and up to the top of the arch. Numerous hikers walk out on the unstable bridge. Due to the fractures in the rock, it is not advisable. To return, retrace your steps.
