“How do you have a Halloween party and not have chocolate?” Emily asks, leaning over the food table as best as she can with her baby bump. “I mean, Halloween is all about candy, and when I think of candy, I think of chocolate.”

Miles folds his arms over his chest and stares at his girlfriend. “I told you this was lame. It’s like a fucking fall festival,” he complains. “Now you see how I feel.”

As Jace packs up his equipment for the night, I linger with my friends while we decide if we should stay or go. Emily and I are the only reason the guys stuck around as long as they have. I avoid eye contact with Reed, who stands across the room with a few of the guys he knew in high school. Tatiana seems much more invested in that conversation than anything we’d have to say to her.

Colby leans against the wall and pops open his briefcase. I glance inside at the collection of protein bars.

“Seriously?” I ask. “You come to a Halloween party and bring your own food?”

He shrugs. “I figured it’d be junk food and candy,” he says. “I’m trying to keep as healthy as I can. Don’t act like you’re shocked.”

But shocked is the only feeling I can muster when he pulls out a king-sized Snickers bar from the depths of his briefcase.

“It’s not for me,” he quickly adds before handing the candy bar over to Emily. “A kid on the beach handed it to me earlier tonight. He said he wanted to share his candy with his favorite surfer. I couldn’t turn it down, but I figured someone would eat it.”

“Mmmm,” Emily hums, pulling the candy bar away from her mouth. A string of caramel falls onto her finger, which she licks off and savors. “So good.”

Miles sighs in frustration. “Just had to be a Snickers bar, huh?” he asks.

He mumbles something that sounds like ‘fucking peanut allergies’ and walks over to where Jace and Theo are packing up the last amp. The drummer shakes hands with Jace before tucking his drumsticks into his back pocket and walking out onto the dock.

Emily leans over the table, upon finishing her chocolate, and grabs a slice of pickle. She bites into it, cringes, and continues to eat it.

“Desperate times,” she says. “I hate to sound like my boyfriend, but real food sounds amazing right about now.”

I glance toward Colby, but I already know what he’s thinking we should do tonight. We’d begged Emily and A.J. to go to Coffin Alley with us on Halloween night, but neither were up for the adventure. Emily wants to stay home and hand out candy. A.J. actually volunteered to help her. Miles was torn – he wanted to go out and eat, but he knew he had to do what Emily wanted.

So we agreed that we would drop the subject. But it’s not officially Halloween yet, which means they can all do what they want when the haunted evening rolls around.
