Dane

Aubrey under the light of the stars is a breathtaking sight. She stares up at me, and I can’t help but feel everything is coming together. That this moment was blessed by fate.

“What just happened, Aubrey?” I ask, keeping my voice low. I want her to trust me. I want to be given the chance to protect her.

Nothing would stop me from making Aubrey happy.

But she shakes her head. “It’s better if I just go back to my room. Please, you have to believe me.”

My first response is anger. The need to shake her and demand she tell me the truth. She must see it because she stiffens even more. Her chin lifts. She’s digging her heels in even more right before my eyes.

The truth isn’t something Aubrey is comfortable sharing with me. Not yet.

Which means if I want to spend more time with her, to get past the barriers she’s erecting, I’ll need to tap into the one truth she’s been willing to lose herself in. Our connection.

I step in closer, already looking forward to this role play. To the strange contradiction that Aubrey’s only free to be real with me when she’s pretending to be someone else.

Towering over here, I trap her gaze in mine. “When I told you I wanted to take you for a walk, it wasn’t a request.”

“Dane?” she asks, her voice little more than a whisper.

“My name is Master,” I growl. “And you clearly wore that dress because you wanted to drive me wild.”
