“But you do want kids, Jamel,” Ethan said, as he raised his eyebrows at me. We were sitting in the Red Rock Bar and Grill having lunch the next day, and I told him about the conversation with Connor. “You told me that when we adopted Susie from South Korea. That was four years ago.”

I sighed. Why does he remember such things? “I said I would have liked to adopt too. Not a baby like when you adopted JC, but a toddler, sure. Definitely school-aged.”

“So why didn’t you tell him that?”

I gave him a look. “You know why.”

“This is like the one subject y’all completely ignore any time it’s brought up,” he said, shaking his head.

“We don’t ignore it; we addressed it like we did yesterday. I told him like I always tell him, I could take them or leave them.”

“But you would prefer to take them.”

“Not at the expense of my relationship. It’s not that important to me,” I told him.

“Okay, I get that,” Ethan said. “But just don’t make it sound like you never wanted to have kids. Or that you wouldn’t be really happy to have them now.”

“I didn’t. I was honest with him and told him it was a goal of mine. But I was okay with not having children of our own if that’s not what he wants. Because I am.”

“Hmmm … alright,” Ethan said, unconvinced. “Jack and I talked about it early, maybe because we were pretty much raising EJ together before we actually got together. He always wanted a house full of children and I wasn’t sure if I did want more, but his enthusiasm for us having kids together got me excited too.”

“Well, you got four. Are you planning on more?”

“Hell no!” he said, making me laugh. “EJ is a pain in my ass as a teenager. I’m apologizing and thanking my parents profusely for not beating the shit out of me daily, if I was even a small amount of disrespectful to them as he is to me. Most of the time I just leave him to Jack. And you too; thank you for taking that one off my hands. When he turns 14 in a couple of months, he’s going to be a full-fledged asshole.”

I laughed as he lamented about being a parent. “And the girls, holy shit! They’re only six and a half months apart, but they might as well be twins. All they do is fight and cry, fight and cry. Half the time I don’t even know what they’re fighting and crying about! ‘She took my hairbrush,’ ‘she threw my doll,’ blah blah blah. When they start getting their periods, I already told Jack I’m going to take week-long monthly trips somewhere. Jeeeesus.” He slapped his hand on his forehead.

I laughed and asked, “And Jamie?”

“He’s the only one I still like,” he said with amusement. “The one I didn’t even know I wanted but now I can’t live without. He completes my family.”

Ethan’s ex-wife Patricia pulled a fast one on him.
