Initiative 1: Enhanced Training and Development

The training function was vastly expanded to include far more than new-hire orientation. Programs and curricula were created to help the professional development of employees at all levels:

• Hourly cast members were able to participate in cast development programs.

• Supervisors and managers could choose from a variety of management development courses.

Even the new-hire orientation process was further developed to ensure that every cast member received engaging, consistent, and relevant training. A four-day onboarding process was developed that employed the centralized and decentralized approach; the Disney University and each operations division filled vital roles. The staff of the Disney University conducted the detailed company orientation on the first day, during which all cast members were welcomed in the same way and in which all participated.

The ensuing three days of training were conducted in the operations divisions. Food and beverage, finance, security, merchandise, and every other division created its own programs, with a curriculum ranging from a general introduction to the division to job-specific training. Cast members from each division who were certified by the Disney University as “qualified division trainers” provided the training. Even when not directly conducting training, the Disney University ensured training consistency and quality.
