A perusal of the data presented in Table 6.4 reveals that the percentage of employment of women to total employment has steadily increased in the organized sector both in public and private sector firms over the years. However, employment has been higher in the private sector compared to public sector. Women are found in typical stereotyped professions like teaching, nursing, personal service and social work. The percentage of women school teachers is higher than that at higher and professional education levels. Fewer women are found in the higher echelons of science, technology and management. A study of the role of women in technical and technological innovations by Sharma (1984) revealed that the contribution of women in this field was low due to the nature of education pursued by them which included subjects like education, arts, commerce and science. The bulk of women work in those areas which do not require technical skills. Their percentage was good in medicine but low in engineering (Ministry of Education: University Grants Commission, 1981). Table 6.5 provides figures on the employment of women in various occupations from 2003–2008.
