It was still dark out when I woke up. I yawned and smiled, careful not to stretch, so I didn’t wake my boo. Usually, I was his blanket, but now Zay was mine. His sleeping head rested on my chest, and he had one hand in my hair and his other arm wrapped around my neck. My phone that Kel bought me because my other one crapped out buzzed. I’d wondered what woke me up. I tried to reach for my phone on the nightstand without disturbing Zay. My fingers pulled it closer and grabbed it. I swiped it open to see a message from Mom.

God, please give me a break.

The time read two-thirty in the morning. My gut sank in part with frustration and the other part with worry.
