THIRTY-ONE:

Thursday morning, Harlow and Chapel with their two Battlemages left for Dragon Springs. Sage, Frankie and Johner, Charlie and Storm went with them.

Sparrow watched the portal close from the entrance to the Grove and asked Hayden, who stood next to her, “So when are you going to speak to Clint?”

Hayden muttered, “Today, Breaker is explaining to Carsen about his family and… and everything, so today.”

Sparrow nodded, “Okay then.” Things had not been easy between the two of them since the day of Clint’s recovery, they spoke but the closeness they had enjoyed earlier was gone and Sparrow did not know how to fix it.

Hayden stood with his hands in his pockets and glumly stared at his shoes, finally he said, “I love you Sparrow, more today than when we first met. How can I fix this?”

She turned to look at him and sighed, “I was just thinking that.”

“What can I do?” he whispered.

Sparrow shrugged, hating this lost feeling, she wanted it to be like it was when they first met. Sighing, she replied, “I don’t know, I feel lost. As though you took yourself away from me.”

Hayden took her hands in his, “I haven’t gone anywhere. We just need to find our way back to each other. To be us again like Lord Patrycc said.”

Sparrow looked up at her dragon and asked, “Are we, an us?”

He wrapped his arms around her as he growled, “Yes, damn it, there is an us. Never think there isn’t. We belong together, there will never be anyone else for me. Only you!” He muttered again, “Only you.” Then he kissed her as he had never kissed her before.

And with that kiss a pathway between her and Hayden and his dragon opened and she heard for the first time his dragon crooning to her. She used the pathway to tell Hayden, “Take me home my love, I long for you.”

Hayden broke the kiss and nodded, “As I long for you.” He then opened a portal to their home and before she knew it she and Hayden where on their bed and he was wrapped around her as his dragon looked out at her from his eyes “Hello sweet dragon.”

Hello Shadow. I am sorry I have not spoken to you before.

“Why have you not? Did I do something wrong?”

No! Never, you are perfect in every way. He sighed and confessed. Fear… I feared you would hate me for what I did.

“What did you do my sweet dragon?”

It was bad. He retreated before she could ask him what he meant. Instead, she asked Hayden, “What did he mean?”

Hayden kissed her then whispered against her throat causing shivers of desire to tremble over her skin, “He will tell you. It is his secret to tell, not mine.”

“But—”

“No, my love, I will not harm him more by disclosing his secrets.” He kissed her once more making her forget whatever she had been about to say.
