Chapter Fifteen

Noah admired the beautiful architecture of the little Venetian fishing town of Izola. He had always loved this place. One of his best friends from high school, Andros, had married the daughter of the owner of a fresh seafood restaurant set just off the pier. The family-run business caught the fish at sea in their trawler and brought it fresh to their kitchens when the boat came into port. One of Andros’ brothers had a similar restaurant on Rhodes. “Tide goes out soon.” Drax had been mostly quiet on the short drive here. Noah figured he’d had so much thrown at him over the last twenty-four hours that he needed to process it.

“We’ll make it.” Drax swerved to avoid an idiot on a Vespa who just shot out of a side street without checking for oncoming vehicles. “You sure they won’t mind storing the Land Rover?”

“It’s good, Andros already agreed.” Noah trusted him; Andros was the first person he had come out to at fifteen. It was to his house he had come when he needed to escape… He jerked forward, the seatbelt tightening across his chest as Drax slammed on the brakes.

“Jesus, these people have no sense of self-preservation.” Drax muttered. “Do you not fucking see the lights?” he yelled out the window, “It’s fucking red, asshole.”

“I thought you said we needed to keep a low profile.” Noah thought it was freaking hilarious that Drax behind the wheel had road rage pouring out his ears. “Yelling at the locals means someone is gonna remember you.”

Drax slammed his hand off the steering wheel, “Ugh, I know, I know. It's annoying as fuck.”

“Take the next,” Noah directed, “then an immediate right. It will bring us into the parking lot for the restaurant.” A tiny shop tucked in between a sweet shop, and a gelato stand caught his eye, “Stop.”

Drax immediately hit the brakes again, ignoring the hooting horn behind him. “What?”

“Pull over.”

“The turn is right there.” Drax gestured to the side street less than twenty feet away.

“I need to go to that shop.” Noah gestured to the one he had seen. “I’m an analyst,” he clarified, as if that explained all Drax needed to know. “Do you have cash?”

“Yup.” Drax waved his middle finger in the rear-view mirror at the angry driver behind him and whipped the Jeep into a convenient spot outside the shop. “What are we buying?”

“Laptop.” Noah got out of the Jeep and went to look in the window. “Does your phone have broadband capabilities?”

“It makes calls and sends messages.” Drax seriously didn’t need to know what else his phone did or did not do. “Anything else, and you are gonna have to ask Cupid.”

Shit, Noah was getting ahead of himself, he couldn’t just jump in and start looking for information. “Um, will he be pissed if I start tracking some things?”

“Like?”

“Um,” Noah looked at his feet and kicked at the pavement, the toe of his sneaker catching on one of the many cobblestones that lined the streets and pavements here.
