Conceptual Dreams
In dreams, God may symbolically portray personal matters in the function, color, or size of an object like a house or automobile. In these dreams, you see the object. You may walk inside the house or drive the car. I often have dreams where I do not see a house or car, but the idea of one is represented abstractly.
When I first had these dreams, I had difficulty explaining them to others. Without sounding like a lunatic, how does one say, âI was shown the idea of a house, but I did not see the house itself?â A friend will naturally ask, âWhat do I mean by the idea of a house?
If we were to have a conversation about my house, I could use the words âmy houseâ to indicate the house in which I presently live. The words âmy houseâ represent the idea or concept of my house. You would understand my intent without needing to see the house itself. That is what I mean by âthe ideaâ of a house. I mean my house as an abstract concept as opposed to a concrete object.
In dreams, concrete objects are not always shown. Sometimes, an object or person is presented as an abstract idea. In the dream where I spoke with C.S. Lewis, I did not see Lewis himself. I knew that I was in his presence, the way we know things in dreams.
Imagine having a dream where youâre standing before a wooded landscape watching trees clapping their branches the way humans clap their hands. This verse from the book of Isaiah would help with the interpretation.
âFor you shall go out with joy,
And be led out with peace;
The mountains and the hills
Shall break forth into singing before you,
And all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
Isa 55:12
We know that trees do not clap their hands. In this passage, the prophet used the literary tool of personification to give human attributes to a non-human subject. God often illustrates concepts in this way. Now imagine having a dream where you know youâre standing before a wooded landscape, and you know the trees are clapping their branches. You do not see the trees, but you know they are present, and you know what they are doing.
I refer to these dreams as âconceptualâ or âabstractâ dreams. The objects themselves are not present, but an abstract concept is presented. If the concept presented in the dream is given human qualities, it might be described as a âpersonificationâ dream. God recently gave me one of these dreams.
In the dream, I knew the concept of a house was being presented. I did not see a house, but I knew that the idea of one was being illustrated. One particular house was for sale, and I knew that it could be given human personality traits. It could have a serious demeanor or a sarcastic attitude. The value of the house changed with its personality. If it had a marvelous sense of humor, its price increased. If it had a bitter personality, the price decreased.
