Chapter 13

Elba

She got out.

Or maybe Vitale found her.

It didn’t matter because Domenick would find out. I had to get Natassia out of here, or Vitale would follow through on his promise and kill her.

But first, I had to correct my brother.

“She’s not a whore.” I gritted my teeth as I seethed.

Vitale’s brow rose. “They all are, Elba. Domenick is always going on about how you’re the smart one, but really, are you?”

I made my way toward her and pulled her behind me. “What do you care? Last I checked, you like two things, wine and pussy. Not pleasing Domenick.”

He shrugged. “Things change; people change. You left an opening, and I swooped in and took it. Now our big brother looks to me to help him.”

I scoffed. “You’re delusional. Domenick will never trust you like he trusts me.”

Vitale chuckled. “We’ll see about that.”

I looked at Natassia and saw the fear in her eyes. I knew I had to get her out of here. “Come on, Natassia. We’re leaving.”

As we turned to leave, Vitale stepped in front of us. “Sorry, can’t let you do that.”

I narrowed my eyes. “I’m your older brother. Move.”

He shook his head. “Not until I get what I came for.”

Natassia clung to my arm, trembling in fear. I had to protect her. I reached for my gun, but before I could even touch it, Vitale was on me. He grabbed me by the neck and slammed me against the wall.

“You think you’re so tough, Elba? Yet you let a Dratshev drive a knife into our family.”

I gasped for air then reached up and pressed my thumbs into his eyes. He cried out and backed away.

I should have grabbed Natassia’s hand and run, but I didn’t. Domenick wouldn’t understand, but I knew, deep down, Vitale was different.

He may have pretended he was tough, but deep down, he was just a young boy looking for acceptance from his family.

“Don’t do this, Vitale. I’m your brother; I protected you from Dad.”

My brother rubbed his eyes and blinked. “Domenick protected us. He’s the one who took Dad’s punches, especially after Mom died after giving birth to Luca. He’s the one who brought us to Angel, not you.”

I shook my head. “No, he didn’t, though he thinks he did. Yes, he took a lot of punishment from Dad for us, but I found Angel. I’m the one who told Angel about Domenick since I was too young at the time to help him.”

Vitale’s head shot back. “What? But that’s not how Domenick tells it—”

I rubbed my brow. “Yeah, I know. He conveniently doesn’t remember that I was there when Angel showed up to talk to Vinnie at the corner shop.”

“Wait.” My brother shook his head. “You were there when Vinnie was shot?”

I nodded. “I saw Angel do it. Angel thought he was alone, but I saw. I ran off, but he followed me.”

“Then why did Angel take Domenick with him?”

Letting out a deep breath, I admitted something I had kept deep inside for a long, long time.
