Ellie is at home, watching the World Cup with Kieran; some men in silver and blue are playing another lot in orange and black. Soccer is something Ellie has no interest in at all, no more than myself, but she knows it’s a sure-fire way to her daddy’s heart, and at the moment, she thinks Daddy is all she’s got.

‘Ellie? Could you come in the kitchen for a minute?’

‘Ah, Mags, it’s gone to extra time,’ complains Kieran. ‘Don’t drag her away now.’

‘Ellie.’ I know she doesn’t care who wins, and this is a good chance to talk to her without her sheltering behind her father.

With an angry expression, she gets up and follows me into the kitchen, where she leans sulkily against the counter. I remain standing by the table.

‘I need to ask you a question, Ellie, about something Detective Sergeant Du – Donal Cassidy said to me today.’

She looks at me cautiously. I get the feeling she doesn’t know what I’m talking about, but at the same time, I haven’t forgotten what a good actor she is.

‘About his son, Tom.’

‘Oh. Spider-Man.’ Her voice instantly drips disgust.

‘Spider-Man?’

‘Hands everywhere. He’s such a creep. None of the girls can stand him. What about him?’

I feel wild laughter bubbling up inside my chest, but I mustn’t crack up in front of her; we’re not at that stage yet. ‘Nothing,’ I say in a slightly strangled voice. ‘Go and watch the soccer.’

‘Seriously, Mam, what did you drag me out here for?’

‘Ellie, go and watch the soccer with your dad. He wants to believe you’re a fan, so if I were you, I’d keep up the act, or he’ll be disappointed.’

Shooting me a foul look, she storms back into the living room.

As soon as she’s gone, I allow the giggles to come.

Oh, Duckie, you big eejit. Not Superman. Spider-Man.
