Make a

Speaker out of Paper

M

In the last two projects we used electricity to create light. Y How about we try to make sound with electricity? Y In this project we’ll see what amazing things happen when we bring electricity and magnets together.

HOW SPEAKERS WORK

Have you ever wondered how a speaker works? It’s surprisingly simple! The two wires leading into the speaker carry a varying electrical signal to a wire coil, known as the “voice coil.” This signal causes the electrons in the coil to move and create a magnetic field that attracts and repels a magnet, moving it up and down depending on which direction and how much electrical current is flowing through the coil. This movement is transferred to the cone-shaped part of the speaker. The vibrating cone moves the air in front of it, and our ears translate that into sound.
