Traven stared at the ceiling as Elena curled against him, her warm breath stirring his chest hair. He had never realized until this moment how lucky he’d been to grow up in a home of wealth. Listening to Elena speak so matter-of-factly about her horrible childhood was making him ashamed of his callous disregard for the privileges that had been afforded to him.

“Traven?” Elena’s soft voice interrupted his thoughts. “Are you angry with me?”

He shook his head and kissed her roughly on the forehead, “No, girl, I am not angry with you. I am angry with your uncle for treating you so poorly and upset that you had such a terrible childhood.”

She sighed and sat up again. “Traven, he did not treat me poorly, and my childhood was perfectly fine. I could have been like poor Bryce whose parents abandoned him when he was just a young boy. Do you know he has been living on his own on the street since he was eight?” She paused. “Thank you for hiring him to work in your household.”

He nodded but persisted with his belief about her childhood. “Elena, your childhood was not perfectly fine. Children should play and run and be given the opportunity to learn to read and write.”

She smiled a little. “My lord, not everyone is as lucky as you.”

“How did you meet your husband?” His body tensed as he waited for her answer. He didn’t want to know about the man she had loved, but he had to know.

“He was hired by my uncle to be his blacksmith. We fell in love quickly and were married less than a year later,” Elena said.

“What happened then?”

“William never liked that my uncle did not pay me for my service to his household. Once we were married, he demanded that I be paid a fair wage. When my uncle refused, William quit, and we left. We were hired by the lord Barten and joined your household.”

“How far away is your uncle’s home from here?”

“Not far,” she replied. “A half day’s ride, maybe a little more. They travel through here from time to time and will stop and visit.”

“How long were you married before your husband died?” he asked.

“Nearly two years.” She stared down at her hands which were clasped together in her lap. “He became ill and died after only a few days.”

“I am sorry for your loss,” he said gruffly.

She smiled at him. “Thank you, Traven. He was a good man, my William.”

“Why have you not been with any other?”

She shrugged. “No one else appealed to me. And while my husband understood my desire to not wear a collar, I have yet to meet anyone else who does.”

A strange buzzing filled his head. “Have you never worn a collar until now?”

“No.” The shame was back in her eyes and she cleared her throat nervously, picking at an invisible thread on the blanket.

He stared at her in shock. His collar was the only one that had graced her neck
