“What I want to do for the next hour,” Fox said, “is gather all of the issues the paper is facing. The time to evaluate those ideas will come later.”
“Like brainstorming?” Dog asked.
“Precisely,” said Fox. “Think about a buffet. We are going for quantity, not necessarily quality. The way I like to run a session like this is to go around the table two or three times and get everybody’s input. I find that in traditional brainstorming sessions, the extraverted voices tend to dominate the introverted ones. I want to give everyone an equal chance to put his or her ideas forward.”
“Are we looking at what is going on or what might go on?” asked Toad Jr. “I think that we have to look at things like shifting to more online content.”
“That’s a great point,” said Fox. “Do any of know what made Wayne Gretzky such a great human hockey player?”
“Um, he was fast?” Toad Jr. asked. He liked to watch human sports.
“Yes! He was fast—both physically and mentally.” Fox said. “By observing where the players were located and where the free spots were on the ice, he was able to figure out where the puck would most likely be. Lots of guys are fast enough to skate to where the puck is. Gretzky was able to skate to where the puck was going to be. In addition to gathering information about what is happening in the newspaper industry, we can also generate some ideas about what might be about to happen. We can blend the first and second steps here.”
Fox isolated first and second steps of situation assessment and projected them on the overhead.
