CHAPTER 15

Brace for impact.

Jaq roamed the corridors, looking for damage control teams to put to work. She knew which circuit boards were most critical, which meant the replacement boards they’d stockpiled from Cornucopia were in boxes, tethered to the bulkheads in the corridors. The older boards that had been replaced were still in inventory.

“Break them out and start replacing the ones that are fried. One by one, from the energy storage system outward to E-mag Battery Four. Control the flow, people. Let’s start bringing systems back online,” Jaq told them.

She had gotten over the feeling that they were going to be attacked at any moment. She had no idea why, unless the EMP had fried the big ship’s own systems. She found morbid humor in the thought.

Every second they were given was a gift that they would use to get themselves into the fight. The sooner they could get an E-mag functional, the better the chance they could destroy the big ship. They could fire visually.

Jaq found her way to the port roller airlock, where she climbed in to look through the porthole in the outer hatch. She could see Alarrees straight out the window, ninety degrees to Chrysalis’s orientation, and it was drifting to her right. Chrysalis had been on a course to open space. They hadn’t been going fast when they lost power, so they continued on at upwards of five thousand kilometers an hour, which was slow compared to what they were capable of.

Jaq crossed the ship to the starboard airlock. This view was more enlightening. The big Malibor ship was drifting without the energy screen radiating around it. In the far distance, Cornucopia was tumbling. She couldn’t tell if the ship was being affected by Septimus’s gravity.

The Malibor’s new weapon was powerful, but it had a significant flaw.

It also extended Bec’s life, but she had already reconciled herself with his life. He never should have gone over there.
