IVY

Deafening rain skated across the roof of the timber hut while I paced back and forth, waiting for Liam to return. Darkness descended outside as day bled into night, made even darker by the furious clouds stealing the afternoon streaks of sunlight.

It felt like Liam had been gone for hours. What took him so long? Just as I peeked out the window, a long, high-pitched howl sounded from the other side of the door. I stilled, sucking in a sharp breath as recognition sparked in my mind. Darting to the door, I creaked it open to keep the rain out, finding a large wolf pacing the narrow porch, shaking rain from his thick, glossy black fur.

Warmth exploded in my chest as I locked eyes with the wolf’s.

I’d never forget the serenity those eyes brought me each night they stared back from the forest behind my childhood home before I tucked myself into bed. The same familiar eyes that comforted me from the foot of my bed for over a week when my parents died, and I moved in with Liam and his brothers.

The same pools of glacier-blue that captured my heart thirteen years ago before I even knew what it meant.

Liam’s eyes.

Opening the door farther, I patted my leg for the wolf to follow me inside. He trotted in, circling the compact hut before returning to me where I crouched, scratching behind his ears as he licked my face, his tail wagging back and forth.

“Hello, gorgeous boy. I’ve missed you.”

The pang in my chest intensified. Until now, I hadn’t realized how much I’d missed Liam, in human and wolf form.

The wolf puffed warm breaths as I tussled my fingers through his soaked, furry coat, shaking off the rest of the rain.

As much as I wanted to spend time with him, curl up on the couch together, I couldn’t prolong my conversation with Liam any longer. It wasn’t fair to keep him hanging. I’d left Woodland Falls for a reason, and until we sorted through this mess, my mess, we’d still be in the same situation come sunrise.

I’d asked for six months, but did I ever need that long?

Leaning closer, I cupped the wolf’s face in my hands. “I’m sorry, boy. I know you want to protect me from the storm, but I need you to shift back.”

The wolf whined, licking the inside of my palm.

“I know, but I need to talk to him.” I stood and took a step back. Summoning the command Liam once told me, I looked directly into those familiar blue eyes and whispered, “Shift.”

In a blur of motion and swirling magic, the gorgeous wolf transformed back into Liam.

He stood a foot away, towering over me in all his nakedness. Usually, I diverted my eyes to give him privacy while he dressed, but this time, I couldn’t turn away.

I wouldn’t.

I’d fantasized about this moment countless times. Imagined kissing his golden-tanned skin or watching the fire ignite in his eyes while he claimed me as his. Yet, I’d always resisted.
