The search turned up nothing, but a couple of days later, I – who was supposed to be oblivious to the hamster’s existence, figured out where it went – it had apparently found its way into the duct system and had died either of starvation or by getting itself pinched under a pipe. The whole floor stunk for days as boiling water rolled through the overhead radiator pipes over the now-dead animal. The stink was so obnoxious that it could not be denied, and it was so unpleasant many residents made a point to commute home for the weekend. When it became obvious that the stink was not going to be gone any time soon, I told maintenance that we apparently had a dead mouse in the heating system and asked them to deal with it.
