After letting his guests dine lavishly at his expense, Lustig began his presentation explaining why the Eiffel Tower was for sale. He pointed out that the tower was only supposed to have been a temporary structure, a gateway to the 1889 World’s Fair, and that it was not built to stand for even a decade; 35 years later, though, it was still standing. He stated that for political reasons, the general public could not know how unsafe that it was but assured the iron dealers that the city had determined the tower badly needed repairs - repairs too expensive to perform. Therefore, the city was going to sell the tower as scrap metal – all 70,000 tons of it, and the five iron men had been called to this meeting to see if they would like to submit a bid for the tower.
