CHAPTER 19

Evelyn swiped a hand over the mirror to remove the evidence of her spying, and faced Alastair. “You’re a sneaky bastard, cuz.”

His lips twitched, and his sapphire eyes sparkled with delight. “Am I? Where is your proof?”

“Did you miss what I just saw?”

“Not a single word.”

“Like I said, sneaky,” she said with a light laugh. “Thank you.”

He shrugged one shoulder, stood, and took the empty wine glass from her hand. “Go get sleep. I have Martin and Ryker investigating Pete. As soon as I know something, I’ll wake you.”

“Will Damian remove the last of Simon’s power, do you think? He doesn’t want it.” Evelyn didn’t dare hope. Spending what remained of her life with Simon was important to her, but she’d rather not experience a horrible death like Tiffany’s.

“He will if I ask him, but not without double-checking to see if the Authority or the Council have a hidden agenda. We’ll have to be patient and wait for him to report back, but I’m confident you’ll be safe enough as long as Damian is available to remove the negative side effects Simon has on you.”

“That sounds dire. Is there a risk of Damian not being around?”

“He’s two-hundred-years old, and you never know what life will bring. As your young man’s brother stated, Damian fought both the Enchantress and the Darkness. The last was touch and go for the group of us.” Alastair shrugged. “My main takeaway from all the trials I’ve survived is this: you have to live your best life by any means possible.” He tilted her chin up and met her gaze without blinking. “Don’t let anything stand in your way, child. Not Pete, not the Authority, and certainly not this little glitch of Simon’s. We’ll find a work-around for it. Always grab the bull by the horns and ride it for all you’re worth.”

His passionate little speech made her strangely emotional. Alastair had faced challenge after challenge with a bold determination the likes she’d never seen before or since. He’d never given up when his soulmate, Aurora, had gone into stasis and remained in the coma-like state for nearly two decades. Armed with nothing more than an enviable love, he sought her out in the Otherworld, and he eventually made a pact with Isis. He’d been prepared to sacrifice himself and whatever else was necessary to bring Aurora back from the dead. And he’d managed it, despite all odds. Giving in to the urge to hug him, Evelyn wrapped her arms around his waist and rested her cheek on his chest.

“I will,” she promised, as she silently told herself she would be just like him. She’d be the type of person who would traverse to the other side to bring Simon back to her if she had to.

His arms came around her, and he held her tightly until her sudden melancholy fled. “There is no greater prize on earth than that of true love, child.”

“I know. You’re an inspiration to us all.”

He drew back and smiled down at her.
