CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

I hunch over the kitchen table and stab a fork into my container of leftover takeout. It’s the Thursday after the funeral. Darcy hasn’t returned, stating he’s still managing his aunt’s affairs. This leaves Kalyan and me with the task of drawing up his new plans. Knowing there’s no way anyone would believe the idea is mine, I keep my head down and go with the flow. The added pressure of Darcy’s absence means Kalyan and I work more hours than ever.

It’s nearly midnight. Lola’s already asleep, so I’m alone. The bite of cold hibachi feels like a three-hundred-pound weight my tongue is trying to bench-press. I swallow, and the unchewed bite scrapes ever so slowly down my aching throat. I try to console myself with the knowledge that if my plan works out, I’ll never be alone again.

Last week at the motel was Darcy’s and my rock bottom. Our story will follow the book, and it only goes up from here. I expect a long, beautifully written letter to arrive any day, in which Darcy will explain why his opinion of Beckett is so low. While I struggle to imagine Beckett doing anything truly terrible, considering Wickham tried to get with Darcy’s underage sister, to swindle her out of her dowry, I’ve been avoiding Beckett until I see what’s in that letter.

A soft but deliberate knock sounds at the front door, and I jump.

“Iza?” Beckett’s voice on the other side of the door whisper-shouts.

Because midnight-me apparently suffers from bad judgment, I slide off my chair and let him in. The sight of him stirs something inside me.

“What are you doing here?”

“I missed you.” Beckett closes the door with his foot. “Magic sucks when there’s no one around to be impressed by it. Up for some fun?”

“I think I’ve had enough fun for a lifetime.”

“Correction. You’ve had no fun in your lifetime. Come on, Iza—I’m trying to grovel here.”

“Wait, what?”

“I’m trying to apologize for not listening to you the other day when I said that stuff to your mom.”

“I think groveling involves you on your knees.”

“You’d like that too much.” His eyes glitter. “I was going to do a whole grand gesture thing and talk to your mom, tell her we had a big fight and you brutally dumped me, so she’d know the other night was all on me. Then I realized I’d be doing more stuff you didn’t ask for, so instead, I’m giving you me. Tonight, whatever we do is your decision.”

I feel myself blush. I’m giving you me.

“Easy, Iza.” He smirks. “Your freak flag’s showing. I mean my magic is yours until tomorrow. Tell me what you want, and I’ll wish it for you. You don’t have to use any of your own wishes. Let’s have an adventure.”

The gravity of what he’s trusting me with slams into my chest. He can’t lie, so he has to keep his promise. I have complete power over him for a night. He’s being incredibly vulnerable, especially considering how some of his other charges have treated him.
