On Thursday morning I wake up from what might be considered seven hours of sleep – give or take four – and whilst having my breakfast I watch the YouTube video where Björk explains how a television set works and finishes off with the line ‘You shouldn’t let poets lie to you’ and this three-minute clip mesmerises me, so I play it three or four times on a loop and end up leaving the house fifteen minutes late.

I pick up a free newspaper on the tube and read the story on the front page about two teenage deaths cause by this killer new drug, a replacement for mephedrone called MDAi, so as soon as I come out at Charing Cross I place an order online on my phone for same-day delivery (5 grams for £55) and walk to the office.

I make it successfully past security, reception staff and other office workers coming in late without making eye contact with anyone and manage to get in a lift on my own and I stand there watching the doors close until the very last minute when this girl jumps in and barks ‘4th’ at me, treating me like shit, using me just to serve her purpose, reducing me to the role of a lift boy, not saying ‘please’ or even looking at me, but I’m actually getting a kick out of this, I’m lapping it all up and I don’t expect a thanks in return, because the girl is hot, hotter than anyone ever seen in this wretched building that I work in.

So for the next, what is it … six seconds, I’m glancing at her sideways and in my head she looks back at me and grabs me and forces a kiss on my lips, a kiss that I relish and abhor equally, a kiss that’s leaving me weak in the knees but making me want to push her away, I’m not just an outlet for her urges, I’m a man dammit, but I know if I lose her kiss, her embrace, I’ll fade away, this is vital to me now, there’s nothing I can do anyway, she throws me against the mirror, her hands on—

And then the doors open, we’re on the fourth floor where she gets off, never to be seen again.

Now at my desk I start doing some work just to compose myself, and I’m soon feeling better so I decide to email Danny and discuss Guy’s situation. I write:

‘Tell me, Danny, do you have any student debt?’

‘No, for university my parents paid an amount for myself and my sister. She went into debt because she lived away from home and eventually went over the amount from my parents. I lived at home, worked and did not need to take out any student loans. Why do you ask?’

‘I ask because Guy has an existing £18,000 loan to pay off (previous studies and credit card debt) and is now planning to do a post-grad that costs £19,600 for which he’ll have to take out another student loan.
