For thousands of years people have been going through rites, rituals and ceremonies to become initiated into Shamanism, and many of these rites have remained secret and covered in mystery. These sorts of rituals have only sustained the hierarchical system of human power and knowledge. This is not good or bad, but a necessary stepping stone to a new awareness and paradigm that you, as an individual, and we, as a collective, are stepping into. All of these rituals have a few things in common. The initiate is led through a series of ceremonial procedures where a journey into the dark places of the Universe is traversed and experienced. It is a journey inward to the deep recesses of the individual soul. Following, is an arising out of these vast places to experience a deep interconnectedness with the Universe and all things in existence. Next, the initiate takes part in a group healing rite of being accepted into the tribal community. Finally, the initiates newly found purpose and role in the tribe and community is celebrated .
All of these rites are archetypal and most likely you have already experienced them throughout the events in this life to initiate you into your Inner Shaman.
THE UNDERWORLD
Many forms of shamanism have an idea about the Underworld. A place where certain gods or goddesses reside, sustaining and directing the “dark” energies of the Universe.
These underworlds are an archetype, a symbolic representation of the dark and shadowy places within each one of us. By traveling down to these “dark” places, the Shamanic Initiate is able to experience a side of the Universe that is often disregarded and kept hidden. Here is where the initiate becomes familiar with spirits and entities that others, such as mass society, have been unwilling to develop a relationship with. The spirits of fear, worry, doubt, death, anger, destruction, sadness, and wile are often met along the path to the Underworld.
We have been taught and programmed to disregard and suppress all of these “dark” spirits, ideas, or emotions. While living in a polarized view of reality for thousands of years, we have adopted the view that these certain forces are “bad” and “evil” and do not play an important role in our society and reality. They should be suppressed, repressed, pushed down, and swept under the carpet. Now that we are transitioning out of this dualistic paradigm, the awareness that everything is just energy, and nothing is good or bad, can lead us, with courage, to all of the places we have avoided for so long.
What “dark” places have you avoided or are currently avoiding? Think of a time, in the not so distant past, where you had the courage to dive into a certain emotion, experience, or idea that you may have had a fear of confronting or immersing yourself into. What was on the other side? More of who you truly be and a sense of power and accomplishment.
