Chapter 7

Whitney found herself missing Leander more than she had imagined. Shifting gears, she took pencil and pad in hand and made notes as to the directions she would follow with her new case, regretting the assignment, but at the same time feeling excitement over the prospect of yet another sensational trial.

Mac called and asked her not to press charges against Teri.

“I sense she’s been through the wringer already. Let me see if I can handle this. We talked, and she swears she’ll leave you alone. Let’s see if she keeps her word. If she continues to harass you, go ahead and do whatever you have to do.”

“Mac, don’t you think it unwise to get involved? I may be wrong, but Teri appears to be an emotional bomb waiting to explode. What if she gives up Leander and goes for you? You’ll have to deal with a crazed woman following you around. You thought Dana’s attachment was bad, but at least she’s sane. Maybe not totally reasonable, but certainly sane.”

“I can’t explain it, sis, but something tells me Teri is just one of those people looking for someone to care. For whatever reason, she felt some sort of bond with Leander, more than love or sex. I don’t know the story, she couldn’t stop sobbing long enough to tell me, but I’d like to give her a chance to get her head together. Maybe you can talk to Leander about it.”

“My brother the softie.” She was hit with a sudden thought. “Wait a minute. Please tell me you’re not just doing this to get her into bed?”

“Believe it or not, this time I am not headed in that direction. I promise. At best Teri is unstable. I don’t want to add to her problems or mine. I want to help her if I can.”

Driving home, she had disturbing thoughts bumping around in her head. Leander’s possible involvement with Red Dog would surely spell the end to their relationship. Paul’s face loomed before her.

“Whitney Underwood, you must be crazy!” she said out loud. “Not yet out of one suspicious relationship and already thinking of one that has enough stumbling blocks to keep you tripping for days.”

She picked Dana up and they headed to the gym. “I don’t get it. He was always under me, calling, wanting to get together every day. I won’t allow myself to believe it was because of some contract bullshit. I didn’t tell you this, but he came to my office on Tuesday before we left for New York.” She shook her head. “You won’t believe what we did—I guess I should say you won’t believe where we did it.”

“In your office?” Dana yelled after Whitney told her. “Hell, I’ve never done that. Look out, Whitney Underwood unleashed! I can’t imagine that happening with you. Is he that much of a turn-on?”

“I wouldn’t have imagined it happening, either. He came in, started kissing and touching, and pretty soon I was so worked up I probably would have done it out in the hallway, in full view of the world.
