Nineteen

Cade rubbed Caroline’s back to comfort her, but trepidation pulsed through his veins. He had a good idea of what she’d seen, but refused to believe it until he saw it for himself. Caroline sat straight and wiped her mouth.

“You good? Squared away?” She dipped her chin. “Was it as bad as I imagined?” He eyed her warily trying to decide if she would vomit again or cry. She squeezed her eyes closed, the faint lines in her forehead deepening. Damn. This was bad. Exactly what he feared.“Alright, then.” Cade sucked air into his lungs and held it for a moment before reluctantly expelling it. "Where are we headed?”

After she’d explained about the tree and what they needed to be looking for, Caroline made a conscious effort to breathe only through her mouth. He couldn’t believe she’d been able to see anything, but that's what he got for doubting her. She kept claiming it was her imagination, but his gut told him differently.

They rounded a bend toward the power lines, and a grisly sensation clamped on the muscles between his shoulders, prickling his neck. Blood rushed to his ears sounding like water gushing through a porthole. It was the same feeling he'd get while overseas when death was imminent. They were close. His skin crawled. Evil surrounded them, without a doubt.

“Slow down, Ty. It’s right there.” Caroline pointed to an embankment up ahead with a trembling finger.

The gurgle of the motor slowed, adding to the macabre atmosphere. All the surrounding critters were still and silent as they stalked the quiet shore. In the distance, a fork-shaped tree came into view. If they found what Caroline described near that tree, it proved that her sensitive qualities had transformed into more powerful, and apparently controllable, clairvoyant abilities. And that his friend was dead.

The remains of a red and blue airboat that had been picked apart were hidden behind a screen of overgrown brush near the forked tree. It was badly dented as if someone took a crowbar to it, and just like she’d described from her vision, the motorized propeller was missing. Cade swore under his breath. Ty cut the motor and hopped out to drag the boat onto the bank. Caroline stayed frozen on the bench seat, continuing with her mouth breathing.

Cade eyed her warily. “You okay?”

“Does it stink?”

Ty answered her question without breaking eye contact with Cade. “Like nothing you've ever smelled before.”

Though he tried to be subtle, Ty's concentrated interest in Cade’s reaction gave him away.

Cade rounded the trunk of the tree and spewed a strain of curse words he hadn’t uttered since he’d been in hell. He kicked a piece of scrap metal that flew twenty yards and lodged into the side of a tree. He glanced at Caroline who wore a brave face, but he knew she was scared out of her mind. He’d never fully lost his temper around her, and now he couldn’t control it. His limbs had a mind of their own. Rage bubbled from the pits of his body he’d sealed off from the world, and now he couldn’t contain it.
