Sustainable agriculture in Cuba

In addition, research centers changed their objectives and strategies to focus on programs with a more rational and sustainable basis. In this period, the world energy crisis and the rising prices of imported fuels, fertilizers, feed concentrates, pesticides, and other manufactured products had a negative impact on Cuba’s agricultural economy. The 1980s saw growing research, development, and extension of methods to substitute for imported inputs.3

The solid research system that was founded in the 1960s was strengthened in the Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG), with 17 research centers and 38 experimental stations (795 researchers and 168 PhDs in different fields); in the Ministry of Higher Education (MES), with its network of research centers and universities; in the Ministry of Education (MINED); and in the other institutions that carry out agroecological research today.
