Ecologic Products

Regarding ecologic or natural products that are being sold nowadays, we have been able to make various findings. When it comes to fruits and vegetables that are sold on supermarket, we must be careful, because many times ecologic is misused.

For instance, a friend of ours who cultivates his own land, as a professional, reserves a part of his land to ecologic cultivation. Talking to him he explains the meaning of ecologic agriculture: basically, they don’t use pesticides or any kind of chemical product to protect their crops from plagues and illness, and certainly not to disguise them to look more attractive. All of this sounds just perfect.

But we ask ourselves: is it the same as with bakeries? you’ll remember the bakeries that sell artisan loafs and avoid indicating the components of the flour they use.

Then, when looking at ecologic agriculture: is it the best quality for us?

Well, we’re sorry to say that it has no guarantee that it’s such an ecologic product. When someone buy an ecologic product they’re simply buying something that hasn’t been treated with pesticides by the farmer, supposing that the farmer is being honest.

But we can’t imagine how a small-scale farmer, with his crops at the outskirts of a near city can sell his products as ecologic.

It’s important to consider the environment within which this kind of crop is exploited: that of agriculture near a big city. The farmer doesn’t fertilize his land with toxic products, there’s no need: the wind and rain already bring all these toxic products from the city to his land. Environmental pollution, proximity to airports and factories should make ecologic agriculture impossible, most of all considering what water is used for watering.

So, ecologic products aren’t controlled and can have more toxic substances than semi artificial ones that have been created in a controlled environment that they sell us in big shopping centres.

We’ve seen farmers who sell ecologic products and who use tractors and other machines to move the earth, machines that run on gasoil or gasoline. The farmer isn’t conscious of the fact that by using these products, they are polluting the earth with their gases. The majority of farmers who we have talked to, understand as ecologic that they don’t consciously apply any chemical products to their crops; they seem unconscious about the fact that by chance or indirectly their own earth may be polluted.

We believe that in order to be able to sell a product as ecologic, their should be a label that indicates where this food has been produced, the exact location of the land (Geographic coordinates for instance), if the water used for watering the crop has been filtered, treated, denitrified, etc... If any traditional tools or tractors and other machines, equally the seeds origin, not to be GMO (or come to that, in a 20km radium of any GMO crop of the same variety) or last generation seeds, because in many cases these products that are sold as ecologic ones actually come from laboratory produced seeds.
