Management. Big bluestem is daylength sensitive, so cultivars are adapted to narrow latitudes. The chaffy seed are difficult to sow and may have a high degree of dormancy. Seedlings are slow to establish, so weed control is critical. Plant into a prepared seedbed or no-till at 5–10 lb seed/acre and 0.25–0.50 in. deep in late spring. A stand of 1–2 plants/ft2 is adequate. Grazing should begin at 10–12 in. and not be closer than 6 in. in order to retain vigor and reduce weed invasion. Quality hay can be harvested up to boot stage, when quality decreases. Plants should not be cut or grazed during the 4–6 weeks prior to a killing frost.
