VEIRON

* * *

I don’t know what compelled me to leave the temple.

I had been struggling to remain in it since the barrier had formed and Duke had issued his demand. My window for getting off this island had already closed. I knew what was coming — I just didn’t expect for Akieorra to take this long. This bitch worked quickly, which could only mean that something else had caught her attention. I wasn’t going to have much time before she conquered her recent marks. When she was done with them, my ass was next. It was bad enough that I couldn’t get in contact with Duke and that left me even more irritable. So when the same frustrating pull returned to me, I was helpless to fight it.

I regretted caving into it the moment I reached the edge of my own little island. I stiffened, my eyes fixed upon the beached ship. It was currently on fire thanks to the hell that had been unleashed on the other side of it. The crew had set up shop and tried to cook themselves a meal. It smelled delicious, but that wasn’t what had caught the rapax’s attention.

It was their infected captain.

I perked when a shadow bolting across the deck caught my attention. I expected it to be the captain himself, trying to make a break for it. I didn’t anticipate seeing the young woman on a ship from 1502. My surprise shifted into annoyance when she was drawn toward the chaos. She’s going to get herself killed. It wasn’t long until she immediately changed direction, I had hit the nail on the head. My eyes snapped to the shadow trailing after her.

Fuck.

The woman reached the outer railing and threw herself over — but not before the rapax left her a parting gift.

I swore under my breath. It didn’t matter how far away I was, I could still smell the blood hitting the air from the other beach. My body itched to respond. The guardian within me felt an immediate responsibility to heed a damsel in distress, even if this was her own fault. The bastard in me had absolutely no desire to answer that call. I’d been screwed over by it already. I watched the woman slam against the water and sink quickly, leaving a furious rapax on the ship.

It released several infuriated noises, trailing back and forth along the railing. It was nothing more than a wild animal livid that its prey had once again escaped it. It finally went still after a moment and its head shifted toward my direction. Its eyes lit up at the sight of me.

I wrinkled my nose. Yes, it was definitely like old times. Now this bastard knew I was back on the island and it was going to try to cross the land bridge the next time the tides got too low. I made a mental note to keep the weather wet for a little while.

The rapax didn’t remain at the railing for much longer since there was an ocean between us and its latest prey had just fallen in.
