Chapter Eleven

Witnesses said they saw a figure in a hoodie with a baseball bat running from the scene, but they couldn’t seem to decide on the size and age of the assailant.

Sidney arrived with a black and white behind her. All the students and teachers were crowded around the parking lot and though the security guard tried to push them back only the cop in uniform was successful at it.

Skyler sat on the curb, his head in his hands. He couldn’t believe it. Not again. But this time, it wasn’t some lovesick trick. This was a death threat. And even though he had already been shot at, this seemed somehow more personal, more deadly.

Skyler saw all the teachers at the periphery. All of them except, it seemed, for Keith Fletcher. Somehow, that thought kept prodding the forefront of his mind, but he was unwilling to give it legitimacy. Maybe Keith was on the field with the team, though it was barely sixth period. Why was he even thinking this? Why would Keith have anything to do with his car? But then he wondered why Keith happened to be at the club and happened to be there when that bartender was about to tenderize him…and not in a good way.

Ridiculous! Obviously, he watched too much TV.

Sidney was busy talking to everyone she could, taking notes and casting worried glances at Skyler from time to time.

The note was encased in plastic and sealed by the forensic team. Everyone wore gloves. It reminded him of the night they found Wes’ body, but at least this time there was no blood.

And then his heart gave a lurch. If there had been blood this time, it would have been his.

When he looked up he saw Julia Meyers’ face between the shoulders of two football players. When she noticed Skyler, her eyes widened and she ducked away, lost in the crowd.

What was that about? Every little thing was freaking him out. Though she had said some pretty enigmatic things to him.

This couldn’t be part of that…could it?

“Skyler?” Sidney was scanning the collection of people and gently touched his shoulder. “What’s up?”

“Nothing. Just one of the teachers.” He took in the machinations clicking behind her eyes and tried to reassure himself as well as his friend. “It’s nothing.”

“Now is not the time for secrets.”

“It’s nothing to do with this.” I hope. “Have you discovered anything?”

“You said that bartender was watching you get into your car.”

“Yeah. And he knew my name from the papers and that I worked here. It’s an easy one-two-three.”

“Maybe. But I need you to behave for the next couple of days. No investigating on your own, okay?”

“Okay, okay. What about this?” He gestured toward the ruin that was his car. “What do you think the insurance company will say?”

She sighed. “I don’t know. Two car bashings in one month? They may not renew you.”

“Shit.”

“The least of your worries. Go home. Get some rest. Order pizza.”

“Will you come over?”

“I can’t. Call someone, though. Call Jamie.”

He nodded.
