Guin didn’t realize how many Catalina Romeros there were. There was an actress (who Guin had never heard of), a lawyer, an engineer, and a doctor, as well as at least a half-dozen others in the first two pages of the search results. But there was only one Detective Catalina Romero.

Guin clicked on the link to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. There was a brief bio of the detective, very brief. It merely stated that she was a detective with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. Guin frowned and returned to the search results.

“Ah,” she said, finding an article from the Miami Herald that mentioned the detective. She clicked on it and began to read. Again, there wasn’t much information about the detective, just that she had been involved in solving a child abduction case. Guin checked the date of the article. It was two years old.

So, she had worked in Miami before coming to Naples. Guin wondered why she had left.

She continued to search for information about the detective, but all she found were a handful of mentions, cases she had been involved in in Miami, nothing about her background or what she was doing in Naples.

Guin sat back in her chair. She leaned forward a minute later, picking up her phone and texting Craig.

“You hear anything from your CCSO contact?”

She waited for a reply, but none came.

“When you hear from him,” she continued, “ask him what he knows about a Detective Catalina Romero.”

Guin waited for the telltale dots, but her screen remained blank. Was he out fishing? He was usually back before noon. Maybe he and Betty were having lunch someplace or were running errands.

She thought about writing to Ginny but decided not to. Ginny had said she would be sending Guin new story ideas. She would just wait. Instead, she sent Glen a text, letting him know she had spoken with the detective and asking how the photo editing was going.

Glen replied a few minutes later. He was at his parents’ place, fixing a leak.

“Don’t they have a plumber on staff?” Guin wrote him back. Though Glen was quite handy.

“He was busy. Couldn’t get here until later.”

“What about the photos?”

“They’re dry.”

“Ha.”

“So you had a good talk with Detective Romero?”

“I don’t know if I’d call it good. But it was okay. Can I call you?”

“Give me a minute. I’ll call you.”

“OK,” Guin typed.

A few minutes later, Glen’s number flashed up on her phone. Guin immediately swiped to answer.

“Hey,” she said. “So, where was the leak?”

“Under the kitchen sink.”

“Were you able to fix it?”

“Yeah. Not a big deal. Just a loose valve.”

“Well, that’s good.”

“So, you had an okay talk with Detective Romero?”

“I did. She at least talked to me, which was a pleasant change.”

“What did she have to say?”

“Not a whole lot. They’re still collecting evidence and waiting for the medical examiner’s report. But she doesn’t think Belem’s death was an accident.”

“She said that?”

“Off the record.”

“Still, that’s something.”

“I guess.”

“You don’t sound happy.”

“I hate not knowing.”

“I know. But I’m sure we’ll hear something soon.
