FROM PAELLA TO PORRIDGE

My ordering the cheapest pizza on the menu reflected my awareness that the cost of Ellie’s so-called treat would be debited to our joint bank account anyway, so financial prudence was still my priority. However, to Ellie’s credit, once the skylarking with the waiter was over, she did temper her spending frenzy by rejecting his suggestion of a fillet steak and ordering a modest spaghetti carbonara instead.

Ellie knew that, as ever, my reaction to her buying something that I thought overly extravagant was being exaggerated in the hope (usually forlorn) of making her feel guilty about the damage done to my wallet. What she didn’t know, though, was just how little exaggeration was involved on this occasion. But, then, as she’d been quick to point out, I knew nothing about the value of the finer things in life, like, for example, her nice new ring. Also, in fairness to her, she’d had all of her original jewellery stolen when the house at Ca’s Mayoral was broken into a couple of years earlier, and, as the insurance company had coughed up for its value, the money for this one replacement item wasn’t really coming out of my pocket anyway. As soon as she reminded me of that, I felt a whole lot better.

‘Hey, Bruno,’ I called after the waiter, ‘make that two fillet steaks instead, please. One medium rare, the other blue.’

‘Blue, signor?’

‘Yeah, the missus likes it really rare.’

‘ Va bene!’ Bruno acknowledged. ‘I tell the chef just-a leave the hoofs on.’

Ellie looked at me with an eyebrow raised. ‘What’s got into you? You hardly ever order anything as pricey as fillet steak when we’re eating out.’
