WHERE TO EAT

Inside the Parks

For a quick bite, there are many fast-food restaurants at the Lodgepole Market in Sequoia and Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon. There’s also a seasonal pizzeria at Stony Creek Lodge, on Generals Highway between Grant Grove and Wuksachi.

Grant Grove Restaurant AMERICANThis is the center of activity in Grant Grove in summer, with a menu focused on American standards for three meals a day. It is a family-friendly eatery and fairly reliable, but not as memorable as the restaurants at Wuksachi and Silver City.

Grant Grove Village, Kings Canyon National Park. 559/335-5000. www.visitsequoia.com. Breakfast and lunch $7–$15; dinner main courses $10–$30. Late May to early Sept daily 7–9pm; shorter hours early and late in season. Closed Oct–Apr.

The Peaks NEW AMERICANLocated in Wuksachi Lodge, this is easily the nicest dining room in either park. With contemporary mountain style and great views of the surrounding forest and mountains, the upscale eatery is a good bet for breakfasts—the buffet is hearty and good for hiking diets—as well as lunch, with sandwiches and burgers. Dinner brings creative preparations of wild game, beef, and other meat dishes, as well as a vegan burger for the herbivorous. Reservations are required for dinner.

Wuksachi Lodge, Sequoia National Park. 559/565-4070, ext. 0. www.visit.sequoia.com. Breakfast and lunch $6–$15; dinner main courses $12–$30. Daily 7–10am, 11:30am–2:30pm, and 5–10pm.

Silver City Mountain Resort AMERICANIf you want a home-cooked meal in Mineral King, this is your only option, but it’s a pretty good one despite the lack of competition. It serves three hearty American meals a day Thursday through Monday and only pie and coffee on Tuesday and Wednesday—but don’t skip it any day of the week. The house-baked pie is a revelation—they ship to restaurants down the valley in Three Rivers and beyond.

Mineral King, Sequoia National Park. 559/561-3223. Menu items $7–$14. Thurs–Mon 8am–8pm; Tues–Wed 8am–5pm (pie and coffee only). Closed Oct to Memorial Day.

Outside the Parks

Anne Lang’s Emporium DELIThis is a fun little shop is a one-stop-shop for coffee, sandwiches, ice cream, and souvenirs. It is an old-fashioned type of place, with a nice deck on the Kaweah River. If you plan on hiking in Sequoia, get your picnic lunch to go here in the morning.

41651 Sierra Dr. (Calif. 198), Three Rivers. 559/561-4937. Most items $3–$7. Mon–Fri 10am–4pm; Sat–Sun 11am–4pm. Store/ice-cream parlor Mon–Fri 9am–5pm; Sat–Sun 9am–5:30pm.

Brewbakers Brewing Company BREWPUBA swell micro-brewery—you’ll see the huge vats from the brass rail of the bar; try the excellent flagship Sequoia Red—Brewbakers has a classic pub ambiance. That means brick walls, stained glass windows, lots of friendly regulars and a pub menu to match of affordably priced steaks, burgers, massive salads, and pizza. Kids love the place as it also “brews up” homemade sodas. Live music some nights.

219 E. Main St., Visalia. 559/627-2739. www.brewbakersbrewingco.com. Main courses $7–$24. Daily 11:30am–10pm. Bar open later.

Vintage Press NEW AMERICAN/CONTINENTALOwned and operated by the Vartanian family since 1966, this is the best restaurant in the Sequoia region and a true fine-dining experience, with white tablecloths, plush red leather banquettes and excellent service.
