Finn’s chat and reassurance had made Persephone feel leaps and bounds better, but she was still feeling a little tired and glum when she arrived at the main library that afternoon. All that emotional fatigue and despondency was replaced with interest and a slight arousal when she set eyes on Vanya. He had managed to reserve a small study room with a white erase board on the fourth floor. When she entered, he looked up and appraised her head to toe before smiling.

“Nice to see you, too, Vanya,” she smiled smugly and took a seat across from him.

“What?” Vanya asked shamelessly, “I think your dress is cool.”

Persephone looked down at the denim shirt dress she was wearing. Other than its shortish length and the white leather belt that cinched her waist, there was nothing extra special about it. “Uh huh.”

“It looks good on your body,” he insisted seriously, opening his book.

“Oh,” she replied simply, opening her book as well. The way he had said it – in that rich, deep voice – made her shiver a little. Persephone tried to remind herself that she was here to study no matter how hot Gigantor was. “I was thinking we could go over everything starting with chapter one.”

“Definitely, you should have all those notes up until the beginning of today’s class. Were you or Finn sick? I noticed you guys got there early and then left before class began.”

Persephone arched an eyebrow at his inquiry. God, does everyone notice what time I come into class? “Um, no, we were talking about my trip tomorrow morning.”

“Are you going to visit your sick relative?”

“Yeah, she’s a – a family friend. I’ll be flying back Monday morning at the ass-crack of dawn.”

“Well, that really sucks.”

“Yeah, it does,” Persephone agreed. She liked how Vanya just stated the facts with a tinge of humor. Her heart had bled enough today and it was nice to talk about it without dwelling on how unfortunate it all was. “Hey, thanks for saying what you did on Monday. It was really nice.”

“Don’t worry about it. That stuff just takes time and it’s not always nice to be reminded of it. My mom died when I was fifteen. My sister and I went to prep school in the city, and I threw myself into basketball to get over it.”

“Yeah, Finn said you were really good; that you played against her brother all the time.”

“What? Have you been checking up on me?” Vanya locked eyes on her. They were darker than she remembered and seemed predatory when matched with his smirk.

“Um, yeah, “Persephone nervously bit her lip thinking of a reply. “If I, uh…have to sit by someone for an entire school year, I’m going to want to know all about him.”

“Hmm, is that right?” Vanya pretended to ponder and sat back in his chair, crossing his arms over his broad chest. Today had brought the first hints of autumn’s cool breeze and his fitted, grey thermal shirt paired with dark denim jeans were fitting attire.
