Chapter 16

Net?

Idropped her off just before five and did not reach home until after five. As I drove home, I wondered about my behavior. Why had I not tried to pull her dress the rest of the way off? I was confident she would have let me. It never occurred to me. I kept going for the last couple of girls until we had sex or they stopped me. I did not even try with Chloe. Maybe love does change everything.

That evening my mind emptied as we parked. I just sat there with her. I only wanted to be against her and needed her against me. I struggled to describe my feelings. I hesitated. I just wanted to love her. That explained it. I only wanted to love her. I did not need anything else. I thought about her standing in the moonlight with her beauty shining through. My feelings for her overwhelmed me, and I told her. I can’t believe I told her. She must think I am insane. It didn’t matter because I told her the truth. I do love her.

I had no problem falling asleep and woke up after one p.m. I remained calm as I got up, dressed, and searched for something to eat. I thought how strange it was that things had changed so much in a mere week. I spent last week in complete agony—and now, calm. I didn’t know why I remained relaxed.

The kitchen clock read two. I had to be at work by four. I thought about her and how we would determine our next date together. Yes, I smiled at that. I had thought of us as we.

I did not arrive early this time, but just before four. I glided across the parking lot as if I floated while thinking about the girl I would meet on the other side of that door. Chloe was there before me, and already she had on her red apron and red bandana. She had been waiting for me. She greeted me with excitement on her face. I motioned to her, and we walked back together to the schedule.

She said, “I already looked. We are both off Tuesday and Saturday.” She paused and looked at me intently.

“That works. Tuesday is good, just two days from now.”

Her smile deepened at that comment. She studied me intently as if she had searched my face for something.

She said, “We can meet here on Tuesday. I can drive my car here, and we can go out to eat and to a movie. No need for you to pick me up at home.”

I nodded. “Okay.”

“Saturday, you can pick me up again at my house.”

I nodded again.

She said, “We can figure out where to go on Saturday when we are on our date on Tuesday.”

Sonia said something in the background. We both looked up at her. She asked, “What are you two conspiring about? I see you leaning so close to each other.” She smiled at us.

Chloe blushed and walked back up front.
