CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

As the splinter-tipped chair-leg slammed through Eden’s chest, the vampire’s mouth gaped open, and he stumbled backward. A dark red patch spread from around the stake protruding from his chest, soaking the front of his blue button-up shirt.

At the sight of Eden falling to his knees, Agnes and Jillian worked together to conjure strength in spite of how utterly exhausted her physical body was.

“Stop it!” Jillian let out a blood-curdling scream, and the entire fort shook around them. With a wave of her hand, Vincent lifted off the ground and slammed into the wall. He struggled, clenching his teeth and balling up his fists, but it felt as though a giant invisible hand had pinned him in place.

Eden wailed in agony as he pulled the wooden spike from his chest, dropping it at his feet.

“Him!” Vincent roared. “You had us, and still you gave yourself to that thing?”

“Eden isn’t the one who bit me!” Jillian stalked toward Vincent, lifting her hand to press him harder into the wall, and he groaned. “I would have told you if you didn’t flip out and start trying to murder someone who never did anything to you.”

“I don’t understand.” Vincent grimaced as he struggled to breathe.

“God, are you really this stupid?” Her face turned beet red as she threw her hands into the air. “My blood is poisonous to Vampires, remember?”

“What?” Vincent stopped struggling, and Jillian remembered that Vincent was in a blind fit of dire-bear rage when the vampire tried to drain her in the alley.

“At Club Arkwright, we got separated… In order to get to Eden and Mina, I had to convince one of the VIP’s to take me downstairs past the guard.” She loosened her grip on him as the subject grew more uncomfortable. “They had a bunch of weird fetish rooms down there. I knew all hell was going to break loose, and I was trying to stall for time while I worked out a plan.”

“So, you fucked some random vampire?” Vincent’s face twisted into pain expression, and his voice cracked. “You expect me to believe it was just to…”

“No.” Jillian covered her face with her hands. “I let him think something was going to happen, but I never planned on going through with it… and then when he made it clear that he wasn’t going to let me leave, I let him bite me.”

“Jesus.” As Vincent hung his head, his wet wavy hair strung in front of his face. “How come you never told me?”

“I didn’t let him bite me because I wanted to.” Jillian held her hands out and allowed Vincent to slide down the wall, landing on his feet. “I knew that it would make him really sick, and I was right. It killed him.”

“You didn’t answer my question…” Vincent’s body quaked, and he finally lifted his head to meet her gaze. “Why. Didn’t. You. Tell me?”

“Vincent, our lives have been total chaos.” She reached up and put her hands on the sides of his face, and he closed his eyes at her touch.
