In 1883, the Erie Belle was trying to tug the schooner J.N. Carter off the beach when her boiler exploded, killing four crew members.

A TWIST OF FATE

Ore-carrying ships in the Great Lakes helped fuel the Industrial Revolution in the United States. The wooden steamer Monohansett transported iron ore across Lake Superior in the late 1800s. At 167 feet (51 m) long, it was much smaller than the 1,9781482458015-foot (305 m) freighters that sail today. However, it was one of the first ships with the basic design elements of modern freighters, including long, open decks and hatches that allowed cargo to be easily poured into the holds below.

In November 1907, the Monohansett made it to safety near an island on Lake Huron during a bad storm. In an unlucky twist, a lantern accident sent the ship up in flames. The crew of 12 was saved, but the Monohansett soon sank.
