15 MY SON IS A MAN

As the sun neared the distant horizon, the departing storm clouds glowed with the brilliantly colored sunset. From the pinks and purples overhead, to the bright oranges, yellows, and reds near the horizon until the sun finally dropped out of sight. Will turned to Sean and said, “I figure we’re still three or four hours from camp. Do you want to push on, or should we find a place to spend the night?”

Sean smiled as he said, “You’re the Captain, Sir. Whatever you say we’ll do.”

“Sean, like I’ve told you before, I’m not anymore the captain out here than you are.”

“I know you have, but you’re still Captain Taggart, and always will be to me. I trusted you to make all the decisions all those years at sea. I figure I will go on trusting you for the rest of my life.”

Will was quiet for a few minutes, then said, “Don’t know that I’m worthy of that trust out here, Sean. I feel kind of like a fish out of water. I need your help and your advice. You see, I always trusted you and Ian, I am sure more than you trusted me, and I still do. We have a long way to go to reach California, and we need to work together, helping one another all the way. I am asking now, do you think the horses are strong enough to go another three or four hours, or do we need to let them rest until morning?”

“Bad as I want to get back, Captain, I can feel Ruby here starting to strain. I guess we better let ‘em rest for the night,” Sean said. Will nodded and turned off the trail into the rapidly darkening forest. He went about a quarter mile from the trail where they stopped for the night. They kept their fire small, making sure it couldn’t be seen from the trail, and huddled around its comforting warmth. They had eaten the last of the food that morning, so all they had to appease their empty bellies were the pecans they still carried in their saddlebags.

Will leaned back into the large hickory tree they’d built the fire under, and Sean laid down by the fire. Only moments later, both exhausted men were asleep.

Sean dreamed of Bonnie and Rebecca, back when Becky was just a baby. Although he had found happiness with Clara, he still missed his first love, and figured he always would.

Will’s night was more restless. He dreamed of traveling forever out on the prairie, and the rolling hills of grass never ended. He dreamed of standing on one of the hills, looking to the west. He thought he could see to the end of the world and there was nothing but rolling hills and grass to the end. Something woke him. He opened his eyes with a start, and then jumped and yelled as an opossum’s nose was only inches from his own.

Sean jumped up his rifle ready to shoot.
