Griff

The following weekend at my parents’ house went more smoothly than Halloween. My family was in rare form, and Tilly had a hard time deciding between manhandling Derek or feeling up my own love bug.

Everyone was excited to see Sam back in the mix, and I was secretly grateful it wasn’t awkward.

Blue and Tristan gave us all updates on how their surrogacy was going. The baby was due in February and my niece Chloe was convinced she’d need to be named Valentine.

“We can call her ‘Val’ for short. Come on, Uncle Blue. Uncle Tristan already said it was okay,” she said.

Ginger rolled her eyes and got up from the table to head toward the kitchen. Pete laughed into his napkin.

“No, sweetie. But you should ask your mom and dad if you can pick the name of your baby,” Blue said.

Every time I heard the word “baby” I felt my heart pick up. I couldn’t help but think of seeing my mom in the hospital and remembering how badly I’d wanted a sibling growing up. Why couldn’t I get over it?

I reached over and grabbed Sam’s hand under the table without realizing it. He squeezed back and then leaned over to whisper in my ear.

“Want to take a break and go sit outside for a minute?”

I nodded and stood up, grabbing my dirty dishes to return them to the sink.

When we got to the kitchen we caught Ginger stealing cookies out of a decorative jar on the counter. She was a thousand-months pregnant with a baby boy and was about as big as a double-decker bus. I didn’t tell her that of course, but I thought it every single time I saw her these days.

Unfortunately, she wasn’t due for a few more weeks and was so uncomfortable she had gone way past pissed off and landed somewhere around homicidal.

“What the fuck are you looking at?” she spat at me as she clutched the cookie jar tighter.

“I was just thinking about how beautiful you look,” I lied, before continuing to lie some more. “I can’t wait to meet the baby. Any ideas on names yet? I just can’t wait to meet him,” I repeated like an idiot.

Her eyes narrowed and I swear her fingernails sharpened in front of my eyes. “I don’t give a crap what he’s called as long as he just gets the hell out. Everyone is in the other room. Feel free to leave me in peace with the Thin Mints.”

Sam grabbed my hand and pulled me away from the hormonal spectacle. Instead of leading me outside, however, he pulled me into the mudroom near the door to the garage.

“Griff,” Sam said after the door closed behind us. “What’s going on with you?”

I tilted my head and studied him, trying to figure out what he was asking me.

“What do you mean?”

“What’s the deal with you and babies?” he asked.

My stomach rolled and I felt my heart speed up. “Nothing. What deal?”

He narrowed his eyes at me. “Every time the subject of babies comes up, you get weird.
