Chapter 20
Aiden settled me on the bed at home with my knee elevated and a new ice pack on it. He handed me a couple of my books from the night table. âYou need to take it easy for the afternoon.â
âNo problem.â I wanted nothing more than to dive into the newest Lexi Blake and J.T. Geissinger novels.
Weâd been mainly silent on the drive home, both lost in our thoughts.
âYou anywhere on the case with the missiles?â I asked. No way had Nick facilitated the movement of stolen missiles that could harm our country. That wasnât in him.
Aiden shook his head. âI obtained a copy of the anonymous letter sent to the ATF Special Response Team office in Los Angeles,â he said. âItâs typed, no prints on it, but it does have quite a bit of information about Nickâs case.â
I hid my surprise that Aiden had decided to share details with me. âSo, what do you think?â
âI think somebodyâs either trying to set right an earlier wrongâ¦or trying to jam Nick up,â Aiden said.
âIt is suspicious, but if we figure out who, it might lead us to at least one of his enemies. Could be the person who killed his dad.â I pulled the wrappings off my wrists and looked at the scratches. They werenât too bad.
Aiden lifted one powerful shoulder. âMaybe, maybe not. Basanelliâs been busy as a prosecuting attorney and has made enemies. Plus, the timeline works so far, and somebody from the crime might be coming clean. I have to keep my mind open, Angel.â
âThereâs no way Nick Basanelli helped somebody steal missiles.â
âYou donât know that. You didnât know him back then. He was pretty damn angry as a teenager, and thatâs coming from somebody who knew anger very well.â
âYeah, but he channeled it into football.â I thought back to their high school days, when Iâd been in middle school. âUnlike you. I believe you channeled your anger into stealing cars.â
He grinned, looking more relaxed than he had in days. âThatâs true. Those days seemed a lot less complicated, to be honest.â
Yet I liked him on the right side of the law. âWho needs uncomplicated?â Sounded like a boring way to live.
He snorted. âSomeday in the future, you and I are going to find an uncomplicated path to take. For now, Iâm trying to figure out the missile case and Basanelliâs involvement in it, and Iâd really appreciate it if you stayed here safely and rested for the remainder of the day.â
âLike I said, Iâm happy to do so.â
He leaned over and kissed my forehead. âThank you. I promise youâll be rewarded richly.â
My body heated up. âHow richly?â
âIâll bring dinner home.â
I blinked. âDo better.â
His grin turned wicked.
âYeah. Thatâs better.â I liked the idea that he called the place home.
He kissed me again, this time until my breath heated to a dangerous level. Then with a whispered command to stay safe, he headed out of the cabin. All the air seemed to relax around me with his departure.
I waited until I heard his truck drive away before grabbing my phone to call Nana OâShea.
